Tree stand Set up
When using a portable tree stand such as: a climber stand, hang on stand or a
ladder stand. Place your stand where there is good background cover to help break
up your outline. Another thing to remember is set up. If you are a right handed
try to set up so your left side is facing the way you think the deer will come.
This is to make as little as possible movement when picking up and drawing back
your bow. Actually your body will hide some movement. This also works for the gun
hunter. For you left handed hunters set up with your right side facing the way
you think the deer will come.
Tree stand placement
The best advice I have found is this, find a natural funnel and look for the best
possible place to set up at. It could be where a bunch of trails come together in
one spot. Another is a fence or water crossing. All these are good spots for the
ambush. For the archer, placement should be within 20 yards or so; the firearm
user may want to be back to 50 yards or more. This depends on the shooters
comfortable range. Do not set up directly over the trail, this may spook the deer
and cause you to miss the shot or worse wound the animal.
Squeaks
For them annoying squeaks you get from using a metal stand. Try using vegetable
oil or another edible form of lubricant to quiet those squeaks. Another method is
to use heated petroleum jelly with a cover scent on the moving parts.
Paint
Paint the inside of your blind a flat black or dark gray. This will absorb most
of the light that gets in and create shadows inside the blind. Paint the outside
to reflect the surrounding area.
Blind placement
Try to place a blind in some type of cover and let it blend in with the
surroundings. You want the blind to be camouflaged. Use sticks and brush to help
conceal your blind. Just remember during firearm season to use some orange flags
or markings to let other hunters know where you are.
Window treatments
If you do not want to use plexi glass to cover up your windows, a good
alternative is fiberglass window screen. You can pick up a roll at any hardware
store fairly cheap and you can shoot through it. And good hunting!
